Work at home moms are the busiest people I know. They’re also the happiest when they become experts at managing time. It’s getting from point A to point B that drives busy moms to the point of exhaustion, and for some to mental burnout. The quicker you can hone these skills, the better it will be for you in your work at home journey. Here are some tips for moms who do it all:
Tip 1 – Ditch the Planner
You were probably trained in school or at an outside job to plan out your day in 5, 10, 15 or 30 minute segments. That rarely works for work at home moms. You can count on interruptions from your kids and your clients on a frequent basis. If you rely on traditional time management techniques, you’ll become frustrated and your entire day will be thrown off.
Tip 2 – Plan by Blocks of Time
Divide your day into 2 to 3 hour blocks of time. Assign themes to those hours. Some examples include:
- 6AM to 8AM – Writing and Client Calls
- 12PM to 2PM – Clean up and outdoor play with the kids
- 9PM to 11PM- Time with spouse
You’ll have a cushion in case there are interruptions. You’ll find yourself accomplishing more when you can focus on types of tasks during a set period, instead of bouncing around from one thing to another.
Tip 3 – Set your Theme to Days
You can apply the same principles of planning blocks of time to entire days. That’s the way busy moms excelled in the 18th century. Those moms did laundry on Mondays, baking on Tuesdays, and so on. We can learn from that and incorporate our work at home responsibilities. For example, Saturdays can be your blogging day and Tuesdays your client relations day. You’ll want to do the same for your household responsibilities as well.
Thinking through how to best organize your time and which of these tips works best for you will pay dividends. Get your family’s input and incorporate their schedules into yours.
